WORK

The Student Visa allows you to apply for work permission in Australia, than you can work up to 20 hours per week by law when you are studying and you can work as many hours you want during the school holidays.

You can apply for this permission for work only after arriving in Australia. Most of students work on a casual basis. There are lots of jobs for students such as waiters and waitresses, baby sitters, gardeners, in the hospitality industry, sales, picking fruit and so on.

Some educational institutions offer placement job, or “job club”, that helps the student to find a job. If you are thinking about working while you are studying, after applying for work permission, you will need also to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN) or an Australian Business Number (ABN).

This website points only some basic information about Student Visa and work permission, and this information can be changed anytime. If you need some more details about these issues please have a look at the DIMIA (Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
